Selection criteria

Which factors guide your choice?

Start with the materials and their surface energy: metal and glass behave differently in bonding than plastics with low surface energy. Next, the required appearance, joint design and temperature exposure determine the suitable VHB variant. The linked pages address clear bonding areas, elevated temperatures and damp environments in more detail.

3M VHB SELECTION GUIDE

From the surface to a suitable bond

A sound choice depends on the material and its surface energy, the type of load and the application process. Peel and cleavage forces act at the edge of the bond; clean, grease-free surfaces and even pressure support adhesion. A general property of the VHB family is no substitute for checking a particular variant under moisture or temperature exposure.

For visible joints, read about clear 3M VHB tape. For elevated temperatures, heat-resistant 3M VHB explains the relevant selection factors; for damp environments, 3M VHB for wet conditions sets out the questions to check. Tell us about the component, substrate, service conditions and required delivery form so that the material and cut size can be assessed for your application.

QUESTIONS ABOUT 3M VHB

What is 3M VHB tape?

3M VHB is a family of high-strength double-sided acrylic tapes for durable bonds. It can allow components to be joined without visible screws or rivets and distributes loads across the bonded area. The suitable variant depends on the materials, surface and loads in the specific joint. The range includes different tape constructions and variants as well as accessories for surface preparation.

How do I choose 3M VHB for clear components?

Choose a clear variant when a bond should be unobtrusive in a visible area. 3M identifies suitable VHB tapes for clear materials, and the product catalogue includes a clear variant. Also check the materials, required tape thickness and the appearance of the joint edge on the component. Clear appearance alone does not establish that a tape will bond to every plastic or withstand every load.

How should I assess 3M VHB at elevated temperatures?

The actual temperature profile, the materials being joined and the production process are decisive. 3M describes the GPH family for high-temperature applications and for joining dissimilar materials. That does not amount to a blanket temperature approval for every VHB tape. Specify the duration and type of exposure and the processing step so the particular variant can be checked against its product data.

What should I check when using 3M VHB in damp conditions?

Check the actual water exposure, the surfaces and the design of the bonded joint. 3M describes resistance to moisture as a property of the VHB family; it does not establish that every component joint will be watertight. Suitability depends on the selected variant under the conditions of your application. Describe edges, transitions and possible loads before selecting a tape for a damp environment.
